Magic Paint

Before painting

Magic Paint doesn’t require primers, undercoating or sanding beforehand:

Magic Paint is the Chalk Paint with Italian origin that doesn’t require primers, undercoating or sanding beforehand.
Magic Paint features a very high adhering power to any surface (wood, tiles, iron, glass, marble, plastic, etc).
The paint is odourless, so it can be used indoors.

What is tannin and how to use anti-tannin:

Tannin is a discolouration that may be due to wood treatments done over time, or to the type of wood itself.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to predict its escape.

It generally happens in untreated wood, when applying any kind of paint, its moisture causes the tannin to escape.

When you run into this problem, there are two solutions to stop it rising to the paint:

– The first solution is to previously apply a coat of anti-tannin or after the first coat of paint when tannin is evident;

– The second solution is to pass 1 or 2 coats of liquid protective (only in this case pure, not diluted) and only when it is well dry proceed with the painting.

Si può colorare su una base in ferro arrugginita:

Magic Paint also easily adheres to iron substrates.

If rust is present, the steps to take are:

  • Sand off the excess, so that the surface remains even;
  • Carefully degrease the surface well with hot water, ammonia and bicarbonate of soda, (in a litre of water add 3/4 tablespoons of bicarbonate and a small cap of ammonia; if you are allergic to ammonia, just water and bicarbonate will do);
  • Apply one coat of liquid Protective pure without dilution and let it perfectly dry;
  • Apply two coats of colour, the second one after the previous one has completely dried;
  • Protect the surface with wax or protective.

Textiles can be painted:

Magic Paint adheres to all fabrics and leather. We recommend to carry out this type of work on low-wear products (we do not recommend painting the main sofa at home).

The procedure is:

  • In a classic spray bottle mix a solution with water and two tablespoons of classic fabric softener.
  • Gently spray from 50 cm distance onto the fabric to be coloured.
  • On the still damp surface, apply the first coat with a cross brush stroke in order to penetrate well into the fibres. It is recommended to wait at least one day before applying the second coat, so that the paint is thoroughly dry.
  • Apply two coats of neutral transparent protective wax. This step is essential to have the fabric soft so that the paint does not crack. It is also advisable not to let too many days pass from the drying of the paint to the application of the wax.

You can paint on the legendary wax or liquid protective:

If you have already applied the neutral wax Legendary/Jasmine or the liquid protective and now you would like to change colour, you can do it.

The procedure is as follows:

  • lightly sand the entire surface with a fine grit paper;
  • carefully degrease the surface with hot water, ammonia and bicarbonate of soda, (in a litre of water mix 3/4 tablespoons of bicarbonate and a small cap of ammonia, if you are allergic to ammonia just water and bicarbonate will do);
  • apply the paint following the usual advices;
  • protect the surface in relation to the wear and tear of the furniture with neutral wax (low wear and tear) or liquid protective (high wear and tear)

How to wash brushes:

Wash the brushes with warm water and dish soap.

I recommend leaving them to dry with the bristles downwards.

If you want to keep the bristles soft over time, I recommend a little quantity of hair conditioner.

Ho to use Magic Paint:

Painting in 3 easy steps

It is very easy to use:

  • FIRST STEP: DEGREASE: Always prepare the surface carefully cleaning it with 1 litre of hot water, 3/4 tablespoons of bicarbonate and 1/2 cup of ammonia. The perfectly cleansed base without any grease patina will be even more receptive and will facilitate the paint adherence. Rinse with water and a microfiber cloth. Bicarbonate and ammonia are the only products that will clean your surface without leaving marks.
  • SECOND STEP: PAINTING. When the surface is completely dry, you can start painting. Open the jar, carefully stir the painting and apply the paint by carefully pulling it and trying not to leave drips and thicknesses on the corners. When the first coat of paint is completely dry, you can proceed with the second coat of paint. Magic Paint dries very quickly, in 1-2 hours in a medium humidity level environment, the surface will be dry and ready for a second coat (on tiles applied to the wall the drying times are longer). Please allow the surface to be thoroughly dry and warm before applying the second coat.
    The second coat will completely cover the first one. When applying the second coat of paint, you can dilute it with 15-20% water, in case the first one was extremely thick. Please allow the surface to be thoroughly dry.
  • THIRD STEP (PROTECTION): Always protect Magic Paint with the best product that suits your needs. Waxes are ideal to protect all low wear restorations (bedside tables, dressers, wardrobes, etc.), ensuring a washable and resistant surface. Liquid Protectives are designed to ensure a high resistance to painted surfaces subject to high wear, such as chairs, tables, kitchens.
    N.B.: Liquid Protective have to be diluted with 15-20% water.

After painting, the furniture must be protected:

Always apply a protection coat on your furnitures.

Always protect Magic Paint with the best product that suits your needs.

LOW WEAR (bedside tables, dressers, wardrobes, etc.)

  • Leggendaria Wax or Jasmine Wax
  • JASMINE OIL on raw woods

HIGH WEAR (chairs, tables, kitchens, windows, doors, etc.):

  • SATIN LIQUID PROTECTIVE or GLOSSY LIQUID PROTECTIVE
    N.B.: Liquid Protective have to be diluted with 15-20% water.

How to apply the waxes Magic Paint:

We discourage you from going back and forth while painting, you would only risk consuming more paint than necessary and not covering the surface adequately.Please remember to apply the paint by carefully pulling it and trying not to leave drips and thicknesses on the corners.

N.B.: do not use the same brush you’ve used with the paint. Being an oily base it would clash with the paint.

After about an hour, stroke on the surface several times with a microfiber cloth, a cotton cloth, or an old, very fine-grained tight, in order to get a smooth and delicate finish.

Hot to apply Magic Paint Oil.

Magic Paint’s Legendary Oil, jasmine scented, perfect to renew and brighten up old wood, treated wood, as well as nourish raw wood.

It can be applied on natural wood surfaces or previously coloured with Magic Paint colours surfaces, even if already treated with neutral or pigmented waxes.

Its natural composition makes it suitable for sealing and finishing all your restorations.

It has got natural walnut tones but instead of colouring, it just brightens up the underlying surface with wonderful shades.

It is perfect to protect your low-wear restorations making them water-repellent after sanding, especially in presence of:

-GREEN WOODS: to enhance the grain

-DYED, LACQUERED AND IMPREGNATED WOODS: to polish and give a special tone.

-ANTIQUE WOODS: to restore the original colour.

It is also perfect on STONE AND MARBLE, to remove or attenuate scratches and signs of wear.

Apply evenly with a brush in thin coats, following the wood grain. We suggest you to apply a thin layer and check its absorption.

How to apply Magic Paint liquid protective:

 In order not to waste product unnecessarily, we recommend using a brush or sponge roller to apply the liquid protector very well over the entire surface.

N.B.: the one you used for painting is also fine.

It is important to always dilute it with about 10/15% water and to use only a little product at a time. (on kitchens or furniture with very high wear and tear, we recommend 2/3 coats given one after the previous one has completely dried)

Avoid leaving drippings on the edges, which would then be aesthetically unattractive.

Finishing

Antique effects with Magic Paint

After applying the protective coat (Liquid protector or waxes), you can apply a coloured wax.

Liquid or solid, same results and application process, choose the one you like best.

Apply with a brush, different from the one used to paint, on the desired surface. After Excess wax can be removed by rubbing it with a soft cloth within 5-10 minutes of application.

You can apply the wax lightly on top to enhance external details, or go deeper, when you wish to highlight frames and ornaments.

Here’s the hack: you can reduce any wax excess by using our “Legendary Neutral Wax“ as an eraser.

How to get a decapé effect with Magic Paint:

After all previous applications:

  • Use abrasive paper or sponge to get an antique effect. We suggest doing it on corners, decorations and marquetries.
  • Always protect Magic Paint with the best product that suits your needs.

How ti achieve a materic effect with Magic Star:

Magic Star is a thickening powder, rich in fibres, that gives a delicate texture effect to the paints to which it is added.

To get a thickening effect, simply add Magic Star powder inside the chosen colour.

The greater the amount of powder added, the greater the porosity and texture it creates.

To emphasise reliefs, spread by tapping or with short, quick brush strokes

Always remember to protect your restorations with a protective coating.

How to achieve a marble effect with Magic Star:

After degreasing as recommended:

  • Apply the first coat of colour (e.g. Clear Sand) thickened with Magic Star powder by tapping with the brush. Allow to dry thoroughly (dry is considered to be when the surface is warm when placing your hand on it. Drying times depend on your environment and the season)
  • Apply the second coat with a contrasting colour (e.g. Dark Sand), always thickened with Magic Star and applied by tapping with the brush. Allow to dry well.
  • Apply a third coat of the same colour as the second coat. Allow to dry well.
  • When completely dry, sand the entire surface (recommended with 150 grit paper) so that the first colour comes out. It is recommended to go slowly and evenly. In this way a marble-like effect is achieved.
  • Depending on the wear to which the furniture will be subjected, it is advisable to protect with wax (bedside tables, chests of drawers, cupboards, low-wear furniture) or with liquid protective (kitchens, chairs, tables, doors, high-wear furniture). N.B.: The protective agent should always be diluted with about 10/15% water.

How to achieve a modern/smooth effect with Magic Paint

 To obtain a smooth and velvety touch effect, it is advisable to apply two coats of colour, one after the previous one has completely dried, with a roller or brush (preferably with synthetic bristles).

Afterwards, it is advisable to give a very light sanding with a very fine grit paper (this creates very little dust and can also be done at home)

Do not be afraid Magic Paint clings very well and does not jump!

Finally, pass on the neutral wax or protective.

The effect will be smooth, velvety and pleasant effect.

How to get a Craquele/Crackle effect:

Fast and effective crackle paint to create a true shabby chic antique effect!

It works by cracking the last coat of paint spread after the cracking solution.

How to to it:

  • Degrease as recommended
  • Once the surface has dried, you can proceed with the painting. Open the tin, mix well and proceed with the first coat of very thin paint, (avoid leaving drips at the edges because they would not look good at the end of the job). Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before proceeding with the third coat (the surface is considered dry when the surface is warm when you place your hand on it. Drying times depend on your environment and the season)
  • Spread the cracking solution with a brush (depending on how it is spread, the cracking will result). Allow to dry
  • Proceed with the second coat of paint and leave the cracking agent to work.
  • Depending on the wear to which the furniture will be subjected, it is advisable to protect with wax (bedside cabinets, chests of drawers, cupboards, low-wear furniture) or with liquid protectant (kitchens, chairs, tables, doors, high-wear furniture). N.B.: The protectant should always be diluted with about 10/15% water.

The two-colour effect is marvellous, obtained by applying a coat of paint on the surface, then the crackle, and a second coat of paint in a different colour from the first one.

It creates a magical and creative effect that turns to antique the look of your furniture!

For a satisfactory result, we recommend that you always protect your restoration with clear wax, or one of the many protectives available in this category!

For a magical effect, you can pass one of the many coloured waxes after the protective coat, they will give a wonderful antique effect!
